Texas Tech is one of a select group of institutions of higher education nationwide to offer the program.

Beginning this fall, Texas Tech University will be one of a select group of institutions of higher education nationwide to offer current students the opportunity to enhance their degrees with an industry career certificate at no additional cost.

Texas Tech has partnered with industry leaders like Google, Meta, HubSpot and IBM to offer a curated suite of 30 high-demand industry career certificates (with more to be added in the future) so students can pair their degrees with industry-recognized credentials.

These industry career certificates will allow Texas Tech students to learn skills that complement their majors, explore new career paths and stand out in the job market.

“As a university, we constantly look for innovative ways to meet Red Raiders' educational needs," said Texas Tech President Lawrence Schovanec. "Employers are seeking talented students who have specific certifications, especially in certain industries. We want to equip our students with these certification options to enhance the degrees they're completing at Texas Tech.”

According to a survey conducted by Coursera in 2022, 76% of employers are more likely to hire a student with a professional certificate. Just as important, 88% of students feel like a professional certificate will help them stand out, and a percentage almost equal to that are more likely to choose a school that offers them.

“We see this as a recruitment and retention issue,” said Brian Still, vice provost for eLearning and Academic Partnerships. “To retain high-quality students, and to reach out and recruit new populations of students who want tangible skills and will use them to improve their workplace opportunities, industry certificates like these from Coursera are a core part of our mission to invest in the success of our students.”

These certificates are flexible, accessible and visible. Certificates are earned online at the student's pace and require no prerequisites or previous experience.

Industry career certificates will be available to all Texas Tech students via their ttu.edu email address. Students can complete these certificates as an optional, co-curricular, non-credit enhancement to their degree program.

The programs are online and self-paced. Most can be completed in three to 12 months, with 10 or fewer hours of flexible study per week. Students can complete as many certificates as they wish. Those who need help selecting the right certificate for their career goals should seek guidance from their academic adviser or the Office of Continuing & Professional Education
