The Bellingham Herald - HOUSTON - Spanish explorers called it Rio de los Brazos de Dios, the River of the Arms of God. Now known as the Brazos River, it winds its way into Texas from New Mexico, crossing 840 miles to empty into the Gulf. It is the Lone Star state's longest river, 11th-longest in the country, home to scores of native fish, many of which cannot be found anywhere else in the world.
