Gonzales, who this year was named a visiting professor at Texas Tech University assisting in the recruitment and retention of first-generation and underrepresented students, served as attorney general under President George W. Bush, resigning in 2007 amid criticism about his role in the firing of several U.S. attorneys and his defense of the use of torture at the Guantánamo Bay detention facility.
