Texas Tech Archivists to be Recognized with 2023 Archival Awards

WHAT:  Texas Tech University’s Robert Weaver and Monte L. Monroe, Ph.D., will receive 2023 Archival Awards from the Texas Historical Records Advisory Board, the state’s highest recognition for the archival profession.

WHEN:  9 a.m. Friday (Oct. 13)

WHERE:  Southwest Collection/Special Collections Library, Formby Room

EVENT:  The Texas Historical Records Advisory Board serves as an advisory body for historical records planning and supports efforts to preserve and provide access to archival collections throughout the state. Each year, it presents three Archival Awards – two of those for 2023 will go to faculty archivists in the Southwest Collection archive, part of the Southwest Collection/Special Collections Library at Texas Tech.

Weaver is the recipient of the 2023 Archival Award of Excellence (Individual), which recognizes significant achievements in preserving and improving access to historical records in any format.

Monroe is receiving the David B. Gracy II Award for Distinguished Archival Service, which recognizes an individual or organization that has provided outstanding leadership, service and/or contributions to the archival profession in Texas.

Southwest Collection/Special Collections Library

The Board of Regents of then-Texas Technological College formally established the Southwest Collection/Special Collections Library in 1955, but the library’s collection dates to the early years of Texas Tech.

The largest rare-book library in 130,000 square miles, the major historical repository and research center spans a 78,000-square-foot facility with climate-controlled stacks and pulls tens of thousands of individual items to answer research requests from all over the world. In total, the SWC/SCL houses 22 million historical items, including the master Coronelli globe, constructed in 1688 and once owned by William Randolph Hearst.

The SWC/SCL offers:

  • more than 1,600 manuscript collections
  • 80,000 volumes related to the region
  • 4,000 oral history interviews
  • nearly one million accessible photographs
  • 1,500 newspaper and periodical titles
  • 8,000 reels of microfilm and videotape
