Texas Tech Recognized Among 2023 ADDY Winners

March 1, 2023

More than 130 marketing entries were honored from across the university.

The theme of the 2023 American Advertising Awards may have been “The Good, The Bad and the Ads,” but there was nothing bad about it for Texas Tech University, which added 131 new honors to its trophy cases from the event Saturday (Feb. 25).

The annual recognitions known as the ADDY Awards – or simply, the ADDYs – are presented by the American Advertising Federation (AAF). Hosted by AAF Lubbock, last weekend's event was the first phase of a three-tier, national competition.

Bronze ADDYs designate entries considered worthy of recognition. A Silver ADDY is awarded to work considered outstanding, while a Gold ADDY recognizes the highest level of creative excellence and is judged to be superior to all other entries in the category. All Gold ADDY-winning entries will advance to the District 10 competition, where they compete with others from Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas. District ADDY Gold winners are then forwarded to the third tier, the national stage of the American Advertising Awards.

The event also honored Shannon Bichard, chair of the Department of Advertising & Brand Strategy in the College of Media & Communication, as the recipient of the 2023 Silver Medal Award. Essentially a lifetime achievement award, the Silver Medal recognizes Bichard's more than 20 years with Texas Tech and her legacy of service, including as the adviser for the national champion Bullet Ad Team.

Among this year's winners were entries created within the university's Office of Communications & Marketing, Hospitality Services and University Student Housing. Texas Tech areas received 22 Gold and 17 Silver ADDYs, with 12 Gold and 12 Silver awards given for student work. Professional and student entries were awarded 68 Bronze certificates.

For the second straight year, the Office of Communications & Marketing received Best in Show for the cover of Evermore Magazine.

“Awards like these highlight the often behind-the-scenes work of the Office of Communications & Marketing, the marketing teams within Hospitality Services and University Student Housing, and the real-world education we're providing to students who will do this professionally in the future,” said Matt Dewey, Texas Tech's vice president of marketing and communications. “The recognition is wonderful, but what's more important is the effort these teams are making to continually elevate the profile of Texas Tech throughout the state and around the world.”
