Lubbock Independent School District and the university will partner to host the 2022 Middle School STEM Challenge.

WHAT:  Lubbock Independent School District (LISD) and Texas Tech University will host the 2022 STEM Challenge Competition, highlighting applications of science, technology, engineering and mathematics in real-world applications.

WHEN:  9:30 a.m. Friday (June 10)

WHERE:  Lubbock High School cafeteria, 2004 19th St., east entrance

EVENT:  Texas Tech University and LISD will partner to create a unique opportunity for middle school students this summer. The middle school STEM Challenge is an opportunity for Texas Tech students to work with 6th - 8th grade students and teachers to engage those students in STEM topics.

“The STEM Challenge is an exciting opportunity to see students discover how to use STEM concepts through a fun and competitive application,” said Jessica Spott, director of STEM CORE at Texas Tech. “Both the college and middle school students are enriched by working together. The middle schoolers learn what it's like to be a STEM student at Texas Tech and the college students have the opportunity to mentor younger students.”

This years' challenge is for LISD middle schoolers to design, build and race a hovercraft with the guidance and help of Texas Tech students. This well-established partnership is beneficial for the Texas Tech community, LISD and the Lubbock community as a whole.

The day's schedule is:

  • 9 a.m. –  Students arrive
  • 9:30 a.m. – Hovercraft available for observation
  • 10 a.m. – Competition begins
  • 11:30 a.m. –  Pizza and awards ceremony

The event is open to the public and media.
