Texas Tech to Honor Tornado Victims on 50th Anniversary

The campus will go dark and members of the Saddle Tramps will ring the bells in the east tower to honor victims.

WHAT:
Texas Tech University will host a special observance to mark the 50th anniversary of the May 11, 1970, tornado that killed 26 people, including one Texas Tech student.

WHEN:
9:45 p.m. Monday (May 11)

WHERE:
Administration Building east tower, south side of Memorial Circle

EVENT:
All lights around Memorial Circle, the Broadway entrance to campus, the Engineering Key and the Science Quadrangle will be turned off, and the Saddle Tramps will ring the bells 26 times, once for each victim.

To maintain social distancing, the public is being asked to stay home and observe the memorial through a livestream on the university's Facebook page and by turning on their porch lights at 9:45 p.m. The university also will showcase its observance the following day through its social media channels.

Media who plan to cover the event should meet on the north side of the Administration building at 9:15 p.m. for further guidance.
