This symposium focuses on "The Future of Higher Education: Redesigning Teaching, Research and Service to Remain Relevant."
The Texas Tech University Office of the Provost and University Outreach & Engagement will host the 2019 Regional Engaged Scholarship Symposium Wednesday (April 10) in the McKenzie-Merket Alumni Center.
The symposium will highlight innovative strategies and practices that integrate community engagement into daily university practice, while promoting teaching and learning, research and scholarship.

The keynote speaker will be KerryAnn O'Meara, a professor of higher education and director of the ADVANCE program at the University of Maryland. O'Meara is a national expert on academic reward systems, faculty careers and change strategies. She will speak on "Equity-Minded Reform in Academic Reward Systems" and lead a discussion on how to incorporate engaged scholarship into faculty promotion, tenure policies and practices.
Concurrent session topic areas include:
Connecting teaching, research/creative activity or service with community needs or complex societal challenges. Integrating student engagement into the curriculum to enhance learning and success. Building and sustaining effective partnerships with different types of communities. Identifying and documenting the impacts of engagement on communities. Capitalizing on engagement with communities to advance faculty scholarship (publications, presentations, etc.), academic rewards or external funding opportunities. Assessing student learning outcomes from engaged teaching, research or service activities.
The symposium runs from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Check-in begins at 7:30 a.m. Administrators, faculty, staff and students from two- and four-year institutions, as well as, members of community organizations are invited to attend. Registration for the symposium is free for Texas Tech System employees and students, $35 for faculty and staff from other institutions; $15 for students. Community members are invited to attend at no charge.
