“A Light That Lasts a Lifetime” is the 2018 theme.
Texas Tech University's campus will again light up for the holiday season as part of the ceremony for the renowned Carol of Lights®, with festivities set to begin at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 30.
The theme for the 60th anniversary celebration, produced by the Residence Halls Association, is “A Light That Lasts a Lifetime.” College of Media & Communication associate professor and outgoing president and CEO of the Texas Tech Alumni Association Bill Dean will assist with the lighting of the lights, a reprise of a role he filled at the first ceremony as a student.
More than 25,000 colored lights will illuminate Memorial Circle, the Engineering Key and the Broadway entrance to campus. A 38-foot Christmas tree will be decorated west of the Texas Tech seal again this year. Numerous student organizations participate in preparing campus for the Texas Tech tradition.
The event will begin with a carillon concert at the Administration Building West Tower (closest to the Chemistry Building) performed by School of Music retired associate professor Thomas Hughes, associate professor Peter Martens and a group of music students.
At 7 p.m., Raider Red, the Saddle Tramps and the Masked Rider will begin the Torch Light Processional. Accommodations will be provided for the deaf and hard of hearing.
From 8-10 p.m., musicians from the J.T. & Margaret Talkington College of Visual & Performing Arts will perform the Carol Concert at Hemmle Recital Hall, where attendees can sing favorite holiday classics along with the choir. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for seniors (55 and over), $5 for children (18 and under) and free for Texas Tech students with an ID. To purchase tickets in advance, visit the event page. Driving and parking on campus
- ADA parking will be provided in the R1 parking lot near the intersection of 15th Street and Detroit Avenue.
- Parking for the general public will be available in most faculty/staff “R” parking lots after 5:30 p.m. Please check signage when entering a lot.
- No guest parking will be permitted in residence hall “Z” parking lots. Ticketing will be enforced in these lots.
- Campus streets around Memorial Circle will experience some lane restrictions and street closures beginning at approximately 6 p.m.
