University staff trains on the TechAlert system regularly to ensure preparedness to alert the campus in the event of an emergency. As part of this training, a staff member mistakenly released the campus evacuation.
A new era of excellence is dawning at Texas Tech University as it stands on the cusp of being one of the nation's premier research institutions.

In fall 2020, the university achieved a goal more than a decade in the making, reaching a total student population of more than 40,000. In 2018, the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education again placed Texas Tech among its top doctoral universities in the nation in the “Very High Research Activity” category. On the Texas Tech Police Department's website, parents, students, faculty and staff can find different resources and tips for safety, including basic crime prevention, the annual Cleary report, daily crime logs, how to report a crime, programs and services and information about the blue phones around campus, a direct line to the Texas Tech Police Department.
For emergencies, call 911 from any phone line and you will be connected to one of the dispatchers at the Communications Center at the police department on campus. The police department is always available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
TechAlert! is a mass notification system that simultaneously sends email, text and voice messages to alert the university community of emergency situations or class cancellations or delays.
- More than 17,000 students, faculty and staff have opted in to receive text message alerts.
- As of the last TechAlert! message, more than 40,600 voice and 35,400 email messages were sent.
If you have not already done so this semester, update cell phone, home phone or text
message information at www.ttu.edu/emergency. Up to four phone numbers can be entered, with TTY/TDD for hearing impaired and text
messaging options.
Parents, if you wish to receive TechAlert notifications, ask your student to include
your phone number in their registry.
