Support Operations for Academic Retention (SOAR) provides services for Texas Tech students as a supplement to classroom and lab instruction, enabling them to achieve academic success and develop lifelong learning skills. SOAR is made up of four departments: Supplemental Instruction, the Learning Center, Programs for Academic Development and Retention and the Texas Success Initiative.

"SOAR is an umbrella name for academic resources for the university," said Michelle Kiser, senior director of SOAR. "We are trying our hardest to make sure these students have academic support to help them be successful. Our goal is to run ourselves out of a job."

Thousands of students take advantage of the services offered through SOAR each semester. In fact, there were more than 90,000 student visits to the Learning Center between fall 2017 and spring 2018. During that same time period, there were more than 50,000 student visits to Supplemental Instruction sessions.
