103-Year-Old World War II Veteran Will Speak at Texas Tech on Friday

WHAT: World War II veteran and Texas Tech University alumna Catherine Royalty, 103, will speak to students during a lunch discussion hosted by the Honors College.

WHEN: Noon Friday (Sept. 21)

WHERE: Horn/Knapp Residence Hall lounge, Akron Avenue between 15th and 18th Streets

EVENT: Royalty graduated from Lubbock High School in 1932 and joined the U.S. Navy as a member of the Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service (WAVES). She was stationed in San Francisco, where she coded and decoded ship movements for three years during World War II. She returned to Lubbock after the war and attended Texas Tech on the GI Bill, eventually graduating with a degree in English, journalism and education. She went on to teach fourth- through 12th-grade English and journalism in four Lubbock middle schools during her 34-year career.

Parking is available in the McKenzie-Merket Alumni Center lot, just south of Horn/Knapp.
