(PHOTOS) For most every aspect of journalism and communications, the best way to learn is by doing.
Real-world experience is often the best teacher for those wishing to pursue a career in areas involving storytelling, whether it's through the written or spoken word or through images. Jerod Foster and his students at Texas Tech University are able to gain this valuable experience through several courses in the College of Media & Communication, including the Travel and Cultural Photography course, which puts students into the role mimicking a travel photographer.
This summer's course allowed students to travel throughout Scotland and Northern Ireland to practice creative storytelling through images similar to that of a photographer for a popular travel or cultural publication would do on assignment. Over the course of several weeks, students produced a travel photography portfolio and several essays while gaining a deeper knowledge of the places they visited and the intricacies of what is needed to succeed in the profession.
