APPAREL RESOURCES - Designing uniform for women in the oil field service was a challenging task because typically oil field is a male-dominated industry. Therefore, the uniforms already available were developed with men in mind.

US-based safety apparel manufacturer RPS Solutions has teamed up with Su-Jeong Hwang Shin, Associate Professor and QDirector of Apparel Design and Manufacturing at Texas Tech University. Under the collaboration, the company has developed new oilfield uniform design for the women employees of Halliburton.

The major issue was the fit. RPS' existing uniform patterns and design did not women at Halliburton. That's where Shin's role came into play. She analyzed the company's size charts. Starting with measurement of body statistics of a female employee through body scanning, she simulated a virtual clothing fit using an advanced 3D software 3D Optitex PDS.

"The size chart was way off from the actual female model. The company's previous pattern set was not close to women's body shapes. Again, these are very common issues in the apparel industry—it's not only one company's issue. Developing a good clothing fit for individual customers is a challenge for the whole clothing industry," said Shin.
