EVENT: The Texas Tech University School of Theatre & Dance , housed within the J.T. & Margaret Talkington College of Visual & Performing Arts , will host the second set of 2018 WildWind Performance Lab public readings. The readings include two new plays: “The Book of Mountains and Seas,” a dark comedy from guest artist and playwright Yilong Liu , and “Three Girls Never Learnt the Way Home,” a political drama from guest artist and playwright Matthew Paul Olmos . The readings are free and open to the public.
Liu's play focuses on a Chinese father from California, two years after he loses his son in a hate crime. He teams up with his son's last boyfriend and tries to visit all the restaurants on his son's Yelp review page. The play addresses dealing with loss, cultural and political differences, LGBTQIA issues and an unlikely friendship in a digital and global age.
Olmos' play follows three high school girls who are bused into a neighboring affluent town as part of a controversial school integration program and the panic that ensues after a mysterious encounter. The work explores the issue of an unbalanced education system in the United States.
