Proceeds from the sale of the official Texas Tech University ornaments fund student scholarships.
As the official holiday shopping season kicks off this weekend, Texas Tech University has the perfect gift suggestion for Red Raiders everywhere.
The 2017 Dairy Barn Ornament, the 21st official Texas Tech ornament, commemorates the historic Dairy Barn, an iconic landmark on the campus. It is designed in the Arts and Crafts Bungalow style, which differs from the Spanish Renaissance architecture found in other university structures. Construction was completed in December 1925 on the barn, which originally was intended as a working laboratory for students interested in the dairy industry.
"The Texas Tech ornament has become a special tradition since its introduction more than 20 years ago," said Lawrence Schovanec, Texas Tech president. "This unique tradition features a student-designed ornament, selected from many entries, with proceeds going to student scholarships. We are proud to present this year's ornament of the iconic Dairy Barn."
Each year, the Office of the President creates a new ornament so Texas Tech supporters can collect the entire set. Past ornaments have depicted such uniquely Texas Tech sights as the Victory Bells, the Masked Rider, Carol of Lights, the "Matador Song," the university seal, Jones AT&T Stadium, Raider Red and the statue of Will Rogers riding Soapsuds.
