Professor Appointed to Government Advisory Committee

Kishor C. Mehta, a Horn professor in the Department of Civil, Environmental and Construction Engineering at Texas Tech University, was appointed a member of the National Advisory Committee on Windstorm Impact Reduction (NACWIR), under the United States Department of Commerce National Institute of Standards and Technology.

In 2016, Texas Tech nominated Mehta to be appointed to the committee. After nearly three months of extensive questioning and background research, Mehta received a letter last month announcing his appointment to the committee.

"It is an honor, but more importantly, I'm working with 47 years of wind damage research, so it's always good to be able to provide guidance with the experience I have had over the years," Mehta said. "We can provide advice at the national level, where we should go or how we should reduce the damage due to windstorms. That is the goal of the national program and what we have been working on for many years."

Mehta began his research with windstorm damage in 1969 when the lights at Jones AT&T Stadium collapsed due to severe winds. A year later, the 1970 Lubbock tornado caused widespread damage across the city. As a young assistant professor, Mehta and a team of researchers conducted a damage investigation after the storm. Mehta attributes these two events to the start of his wind research career.

The NACIWR term begins immediately and ends Sept. 30. The committee is responsible for advising the director of the National Institute of Standards and Technology on data collected about windstorm impact. Responsibilities of the committee include monitoring trends and development of windstorm impact mitigation, collecting information for the strategic plan for the National Windstorm Impact Reduction Program, the coordination of the program, and determining the effectiveness and revisions to the program.
