Texas Tech students and staff will travel to Laredo and partner with Habitat for Humanity to focus on affordable housing, disaster recovery and community development projects.
Students and staff of Texas Tech University's Center for Active Learning and Undergraduate Engagement (CALUE) will travel to Laredo next week for their annual winter service break trip. The trip is part of CALUE's Service Breaks program, which offers service projects and week-long service trips throughout the year.
From Jan. 8-13, participants will partner with Laredo Habitat for Humanity. The organization's mission is to eliminate substandard housing by building simple, decent and affordable houses for families in need in Laredo and Webb County.
"By engaging students in hands-on, experiential service, the Service Breaks program allows them to appreciate the impact they can have on communities and foster a commitment to life-long, active citizenship," said Jacy Proctor, unit coordinator.
Students will blog about their experience during their trip. The posts will be shared on their Twitter and Facebook pages.
The CALUE Service Breaks program began in 2014 and offers service break trips in the winter, spring and summer terms. This spring break, CALUE will travel to Grand Canyon National Park (March 11-17) where participants will work on various projects related to environmental conservation and the importance of state and national parks.
CALUE will head to Costa Rica (May 22-31) to work with United Planet for the summer service break and the program's first international trip. The focus will be sea turtle conservation and protecting nests from human poachers and beach erosion.
