Student Spotlight: Third-Generation Military Family Member Inspired to Serve

Texas Tech University ROTC student recently awarded scholarship by state representative.

Mar John Ecija

Ask Mar John Ecija where he’s from and he hesitates to answer. Growing up in a military family, the junior management information systems major was born in the Philippines and lived in Germany, California and Guam, before receiving his American citizenship in San Antonio.

“It was great because we got to travel around the world, see different people, different cultures, and experience what other people don't have the opportunity to do,” Ecija said. “But that also means sometimes you have to leave behind the friends and people you have met.”

Now he lives in Lubbock and has been part of the Red Raider family for three years.

Ecija comes from a military family of three generations and recently received the Texas Army Services Scholarship from state Rep. J.D. Sheffield. The scholarship is awarded to students who are committed to education and service, and interested in joining the Texas Guard, Army National Guard, United States Merchant Marine or Air National Guard.

Ecija’s stepfather, a major in the U.S. Air Force, was one of the first to inspire Ecija’s passion to serve. Ecija said he learned a lot of lessons growing up in a military family.

“The core values of the Air Force always stick with me,” he said. “Integrity first, service before self and excellence in all we do.”

Ecija is a member of Texas Tech’s ROTC, a program providing Army ROTC tools through classes and field training. With the training, students can become an Army officer while working on a college degree.

“The ROTC program here at Texas Tech is great,” he said. “It prepares every cadet to be a future leader.”

After graduation, Ecija plans on following his family’s footsteps and serving his country.
