Board of Regents Elects New Officers, Swears in Newly Appointed Members

The Texas Tech University (TTU) System Board of Regents elected today (Feb. 28) Mickey Long and Larry Anders chairman and vice chairman, respectively, during its February board meeting in Abilene. The two will serve two-year terms effective immediately. 

Long, who just completed a term as vice chairman of the board, replaces Jerry Turner of Blanco as chairman of the board. 

“I am honored to have been elected to lead this group,” Long said. “The current momentum throughout the Texas Tech University System is exciting, and I look forward to continuing to work with the Board of Regents to help advance our institutions.”

Long was appointed to the board in 2009. He is president of Westex Well Service LP, a business specializing in oil and gas operations. Long, who lives in Midland, is a member of the Association of Energy Service Companies and the Texas Tech University Hall of Legacy. His term expires Jan. 31, 2015. 

Anders was appointed to the board in 2005 and has previously served as the board’s chairman and vice chairman. He lives in Plano and is the chairman and majority owner of Summit Alliance Companies, an independent investment advisory and financial services firm in Dallas. His term expires Jan. 31, 2017.

Additionally, three regents took their oath of office after being appointed by Gov. Rick Perry to the TTU System Board of Regents. 

Tim Lancaster of Abilene and John Esparza of Austin were newly appointed and replace former Regents Jerry Turner and John Field Scovell of Dallas. L. Frederick “Rick” Francis of El Paso was reappointed. Each of the three appointees will serve a six-year term ending Jan. 31, 2019.

Lancaster is president and CEO of Hendrick Health System. He is past board chairman of the Texas Hospital Association, a member of the American Hospital Association Regional Policy Board and Healthcare Coalition of Texas Executive Committee, and a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives.

Esparza is president and CEO of the Texas Motor Transportation Association. He is an executive officer of HELP Inc., and a member of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance, Trucking Association Executives Council, Texas Society of Association Executives, and College of Media and Communication National Advisory Board at Texas Tech University.

Francis is executive chairman of WestStar Bank and Francis Properties. He also serves on the Board of Directors of Western Refining Inc. (NYSE:WNR), Providence Memorial Hospital, Sierra Medical Center, the Greater El Paso Chamber of Commerce Foundation, the Medical Center of the Americas Foundation, the Paso del Norte Group, and the Texas Philosophical Society. He was appointed to the board in 2003, and this will be his third term on the Board of Regents.
