Texas Tech Announces Weeklong Homecoming Events

The week will culminate with the annual parade, and then the football game against West Virginia.

Texas Tech University’s homecoming, “Texas: Don’t Wreck with Tech” features a weeklong celebration of spirit and tradition beginning Oct. 8. The week culminates with the homecoming football game at 2:30 p.m. versus new conference rival, West Virginia.

Student organizations compete in many of the events throughout the week, including the Spirit Board and Spirit Banner competitions, S.O. Sing, and the parade float contest. Homecoming king and queen will be announced during halftime of Saturday’s football game.

  • Broadway Ave. & University Ave.

    Student organizations’ spirit boards will be displayed at the Broadway entrance to campus.

  • Spirit Banner Competition
  • Student Union Building (SUB)

    Spirit Banners made by Tech’s student organizations will be on display at the SUB.

    Monday, Oct. 8
  • Homecoming Kickoff
  • SUB North Plaza, noon

    Kickoff will feature guest speaker Kirby Hocutt and will announce the homecoming queen and king candidates.

  • Line Dance Flash Mob
  • SUB North Plaza, immediately following homecoming kickoff

    A line dance flash mob will occur in the North Plaza outside of the SUB.

    Tuesday, Oct. 9
  • Cactus Creations
  • SUB West Basement, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.

    Students can plant their own cactus for home or dorm decoration with a valid student ID.

  • Campus-Wide Scavenger Hunt
  • Memorial Circle, 4 p.m.

    Students may participate in a photo scavenger hunt featuring significant items around campus.

    Wednesday, Oct. 10
  • Custom Leather Bracelets
  • SUB North Plaza, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

    Students can create custom leather bracelets (with a valid student ID).

  • S.O. Sing
  • United Spirit Arena, 8 p.m.

    Student organizations will contend in a dance-and-sing competition.

    Thursday, Oct. 11
  • Tamale Fest
  • Urbanovsky Park, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.

    Sponsored by Campus Crusade for Christ

  • Techsan Memorial
  • Memorial Circle, 5:30 p.m.

    Chancellor Kent Hance and Interim President Lawrence Schovanec will join with other university officials in remembrance of Texas Tech students, alumni, faculty and staff who have passed away in the last year.

    Friday, Oct. 12
  • Rowdy Raider Rally
  • SUB North Plaza, noon

    The top 10 homecoming king and queen candidates will be available for a meet-and-greet.

  • Presidential Lecture and Performance Series
  • President’s Reading Program Author: Timothy Egan

    SUB Allen Theatre, 7 p.m.

    Speaker presentation followed by a book signing.

  • Homecoming March, Pep Rally and Bonfire
  • Urbanovsky Park, 9 p.m.

    The homecoming pep rally and bonfire will begin with the inaugural homecoming march, as the Goin’ Band from Raiderland and spirit squads will march along 18th Street to Urbanovsky Park. The pep rally and bonfire will feature performances by the spirit squads and band, Raider Red, the Masked Rider and guest speakers.

    Saturday, Oct. 13
  • Homecoming Parade
  • Texas Tech Broadway Entrance, 9 a.m.

    The parade is a chance for the student organizations and community businesses to join together in a celebration of Red Raider spirit. The route begins at the First Baptist Church on Broadway and ends at the College of Education building. (Parade Route)
