Twenty middle school math and science teachers are now better equipped to integrate math and science curriculum into their schools.
All 20 students who were participants of the first cohort of the Middle School Math Science (MS2) scholarship degree program graduated Aug. 11. The group started its Master of Science degree in Multidisciplinary Science with an emphasis in the integration of math and science of middle school students in fall 2009.
“We want to congratulate the Cohort One students for their scholastic success,” said Esther Lucey, program coordinator. “The (MS)2 key program leaders and staff members appreciate the leadership of the grant’s sponsor, the Greater Texas Foundation.”
The foundation gave Texas Tech $3 million in 2008 to fund the program.
Taking one online course each regular semester and two courses on campus each first summer session, these full-time middle school teachers completed their degree in three years. Each on-line course used Second Life. This technology required each faculty member and student to create an individual Avatar who attended virtual reality courses held in the College of Education, College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Engineering.
During the length of the program, the students had the opportunity to enrich their professional lives by applying for mini-grant awards and on-campus research lab experiences. These additional experiences resulted in poster presentations during each summer’s annual conference. Many students attended regional and state conferences where they presented their posters or their own research projects.
A reception was held before the August commencement to celebrate the beginning of their professional second life.
