Texas Tech Law Wins Regional ABA Client Counseling Competition

Written by Celeste Villarreal

Texas Tech University School of Law third-year students James Garrett and Meghan Graham won the regional American Bar Association (ABA) Law Student Division Client Counseling Competition. The team is coached by Professor Charles P. Bubany.

“The reason I like this competition is that it involves what every lawyer does – interviewing and counseling clients,” Bubany said. “And I’ve found out in coaching that there is a lot more to it than people think.”

Eleven teams from schools across Texas and Colorado competed in the contest, which was hosted Feb. 11 by the Texas Tech Law School at the Mark & Becky Lanier Professional Development Center. The team now advances to the national competition in North Carolina March 16-17 where a total of 12 teams will vie for the national title.

The ABA Law Student Division Client Counseling Competition simulates a law office consultation in which law students, acting as attorneys, are presented with a client matter. They interview with a mock client and then provide counseling advice based on the facts of the situation provided.
