Spring Enrollment Sets New Standard

This semester sets spring record and, overall, is the third-largest enrollment in school history.

The Constitution was signed at Independence Hall on Sept. 17, 1787.

Texas Tech President Guy Bailey on the continued enrollment growth: "This is an exciting time in our school’s history and everyone from current students, faculty and staff to alumni and supporters should be proud of the direction we’re headed."

For the second consecutive spring semester, Texas Tech set a record with 30,102 students enrolled for classes as of the 20th day of classes (Feb. 15), the official reporting day.  This is the first time more than 30,000 students have been enrolled for a spring semester.

“We have experienced tremendous growth in our student population in the last several years, including a more than 25 percent increase in enrollment in the last decade,” said Guy Bailey, Texas Tech president. “And, we’re recruiting the highest quality students.

Spring semester enrollment figures are traditionally smaller than those in the previous fall due to December graduation, but this spring’s total ranks as the third overall largest enrollment by semester since the university opened its doors in 1925. The two largest enrollments came in the fall semesters of 2011 and 2010, respectively.

“We are talking to high school students, and they want to be at Texas Tech,” Bailey said. “This is an exciting time in our school’s history and everyone from current students, faculty and staff to alumni and supporters should be proud of the direction we’re headed.”

The previous spring enrollment record of 29,604 students was set in 2011, and is the fifth-largest single-semester enrollment for the university.

“Texas Tech’s continued enrollment success demonstrates the university’s influence and prestige across the region and state,” said Chancellor Kent Hance of the Texas Tech University System.  “Great work is being done by the entire Texas Tech team, and I could not be prouder of this critical progress, which is driving economic development and advancing our mission and vision.”

Undergraduate enrollment increased to 24,133 students, up from 23,550 students a year ago, while the Texas Tech School of Law experienced an increase to 668 students from 650 students last spring.
