The Texas Tech University Spirit Program has named the 16-member pom squad for the 2011-2012 season.
A total of 74 dancers completed the preliminary audition process, with 32 named as finalists for the 16 available slots.
Named for next year’s squad are Abby Bertrand, a junior from Round Rock; Brittany Brossman, a sophomore from Houston; Kelsey Buckner, a sophomore from Rowlett; Kathleen Busch, a sophomore from Plano; Jackie Choi, a sophomore from Lewisville; Lashey Lanford, a junior from Allen; Caroline McBride, a freshman from Highlands Ranch, Colo.; Wesley Metter, a freshman from Dallas; Janelle Midkiff, a junior from Odessa; Kasey Mohler, a sophomore from Lubbock; Peyton Ratliff, a sophomore from Victoria; Kortani Rettig, a sophomore from Mesquite; Kelsey Schneider, a freshman from Katy; Dawn Stecklein, a freshman from Flower Mound; Sarah Steinbauer, a freshman from The Woodlands; and Briana Vela, a senior from Lubbock.
Bruce Bills, the team’s coach, said the preliminary auditions consisted of a dance and fight song routine taught from a DVD mailed out one week prior to auditions. Also included in prelims was an across-the-floor exercise, where dance skills were judged on execution and flexibility.
For finals the dancers performed the audition dance as well as a quick routine that they had 15 minutes to learn then perform. Following the dance audition each dancer had an interview with a panel of judges.
“In June we will have a week of practices where the squad will begin setting formations and cleaning all traditional dance routines performed at appearances and games,” Bills said. “In July the squad will have a week of choreography practices where they learn new routines taught by our choreographer with focus on dance technique.”
Cathey Brown, a former Texas Tech Pom member, will serve as technical dance advisor.
