Red Raiders Dance for a Great Cause

Texas Tech University and Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center students will join forces to host the first RaiderThon, a dance marathon with all proceeds benefitting Children’s Miracle Network (CMN), 2 p.m. Oct. 23 at the Robert H. Ewalt Student Recreation Center.

Dance Marathon is a nationwide movement founded in 1991 involving college and high school students at more than 150 schools across the country raising money for CMN.

RaiderThon will be a six-hour event where students stay on their feet through dancing, games and entertainment. Hannah Smith, Texas Tech Student Government Association senator, said this has become a passion for many students and organizations on both campuses.

“The students spend a year learning valuable leadership and social skills while raising funds in a variety of ways and interacting with children’s hospital patients and families,” Smith said. “We look forward to having not only the Texas Tech family come out but the entire West Texas community come and support the Children’s Miracle Network.”

The goal for RaiderThon is to raise $12,000. Registration is $15 per participant and includes a meal, snacks, live music, opportunities for prizes and giveaways, and a T-shirt.

Other activities include the RaiderThon Jailbreak and Penny Wars from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Oct. 13, 14 and 15. Athletes, administrators and recognizable students will be placed in plastic jail cells for 30 minutes to an hour and required to raise money from students passing by before they are released.

CMN is a charity that raises funds for more than 170 children’s hospitals. Donations to    CMN are used to provide charitable care, purchase life-saving equipment and fund research and education programs that save and improve the lives of 17 million children each year.
