The motion-activated lighting in the stacks of Texas Tech’s library stays mostly dim these days.
The visitors who browse its aisles of shelves usually don’t borrow any of the thousands of books.
Two-thirds of the 2.5-million book collection has not been checked out in the last five years. Overall circulation, too, has dropped to less than 130,000 last year, a more than 30 percent drop in the last decade.
