July 23, 2010
Following a January 2010 accident in a laboratory in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, a working group was convened to examine how Texas Tech manages laboratory safety, the culture of safety awareness and safety training compliance.
The group, chaired by Dr. Alice Young, faculty fellow for research integrity in the Office of the Vice President for Research, completed their report July 19.
A number of recommendations made by the group will be instituted including establishing a university-wide Research Safety Committee that will be chaired by Dr. Young. Further, effective Sept. 1, the Texas Tech Office of Environmental Health and Safety will be reporting to Dr. Young in the Office of the Vice President for Research. The committee will be charged with implementing all recommendations in the report as soon as reasonably possible.
