Higher education notes

The state has seven public emerging research universities: the University of Texas at Arlington, UT-Dallas, UT-El Paso, UT-San Antonio, Texas Tech University, the University of Houston and the University of North Texas. Under legislation enacted last year, those schools can compete for additional money to help them reach the top tier of research institutions, a status enjoyed in Texas only by UT-Austin, Texas A&M University and the private Rice University.
