Colleges map out route to top tier

Those arguments worked last year, as the Legislature approved a plan to elevate one
or more of the state's seven emerging research universities. In November, voters authorized
a new National Research University Fund worth $500 million, although it could grow
before the schools are allowed to tap it.
In addition to UH and UT-El Paso, eligible schools include Texas Tech University,
the University of North Texas, UT-Arlington, UT-Dallas and UT-San Antonio.
