Texas Tech Named to National Honor Roll

For the third consecutive year, Texas Tech University was named to the 2009 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll.

The university was one of 30 institutions of higher education in Texas selected for the honor roll by the Corporation for National and Community Service.

“I want to commend the faculty and staff involved whose efforts have earned Texas Tech a place on this honor roll,” said President Guy Bailey. “One of our goals at Texas Tech is to create opportunities for involvement in social and community service activities. Achieving this recognition for the third year in a row speaks to the high level of excellence our outreach programs provide.”

Five Texas Tech projects were submitted to earn this ensemble award:

• Future Akins-Tillett, assistant professor of art education and visual studies in the School of Art, for Lowrider Bikes in Higher Education
• Jodi Gonzalez, unit assistant director with Academic Operations and Services, for the PEGASUS Program for First Generation College Students
• Stephanie J. Jones, assistant professor with the Higher Education Program, for the Team-Up for College Knowledge program
• Amy Murphy, managing director for the Center for Campus Life, with the Greek Build Project
• Janie Ramirez, administrator with the College of Education, for Project FUTURE, Finding Unique Teachers through Unprecedented Recruitment Efforts

The ensemble award was coordinated by Irene Arellano, service learning coordinator in the Teaching, Learning and Technology Center (TLTC). The TLTC at Texas Tech University supports the university’s commitment to excellence in teaching and learning by providing interactive faculty development opportunities, practical teaching assistance, encouraging innovation in experiential pedagogies, supporting technologies that enhance the teaching and learning process,and promoting the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.

The President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, launched in 2006, recognizes colleges and universities nationwide that support innovative and effective community service and service-learning programs. Honorees are chosen by displaying leadership to build a culture of service and civic engagement on their campuses.
