One of the longest-running national women’s leadership programs in the world selected Laura Heinz, head of Texas Tech University Library Information Services, for its Leadership America Program.

2010 Leadership America will explore the ramifications of a rapidly changing global environment where boundaries are blurred and borders are diminished. Programs will focus on the economy, healthcare and education.

“Through this year-long experience, Laura will be equipped with information on the newest developments in the economy, technology and global trade that will give her the competitive edge in our rapidly changing world,” said Wanda Brice, CEO of The Women’s Museum: An Institute for the Future, which sponsors the leadership program.

“This program really focuses on interconnectedness,” Heinz said. “It offers a global perspective that I can bring back to Texas Tech.”

The 22 participants will attend sessions held throughout the year in Dallas, Atlanta and Washington, D.C. The fourth session includes an optional overseas trip to Abu Dhabi and Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Heinz has worked at the Texas Tech Library for 23 years, focusing on providing service to library users. She changed the paradigm of librarians in her department as she removed them from behind the Reference Desk and embedded them in the academic departments to which they are assigned.

She is a 2009 graduate of the Leadership Institute for Academic Librarians (Harvard University);  a 2008 Summer Fellow for the Peabody Professional Institute for Academic Library Leaders (Vanderbilt University);  and a member of the 2008 class of Leadership Texas where she continues to be active by serving on the Leadership Texas Committee of the Board.  She was selected to serve on the Transforming Texas Libraries Task Force for the Texas Library Association where she was a 1996 graduate of the Texas Accelerated Library Leaders (TALL Texans) Leadership Institute.
