Former University of Texas System regent John Barnhill said today that Gov. Rick Perry asked him last December to support former state senator John Montford as the system’s next chancellor, instead of Francisco Cigarroa.

Barnhill and the rest of the board ended up supporting Cigarroa, who holds the job today.

Barnhill is the first regent to say publicly that Perry weighed in on the chancellor hiring.

“The phone call didn’t help in my decision-making,” Barnhill said. He said he supported Cigarroa because he knew him better than Montford and because his experience made him a natural fit for the job.
