In another life, Mike Leach says he would have patterned his life after famed trial lawyer Gerry Spence and gone after abusive corporations. Law fits Mr. Leach's personality as someone who enjoys diving into the minutiae of obscure topics. But after attending Pepperdine School of Law, he decided courtroom drama wasn't for him.

Mr. Leach started coaching college football instead, and has become pretty good at it, after stops as far afield as the College of the Desert and a semipro team in Finland, as well as Kentucky and Oklahoma, among others. He's transformed Texas Tech University from an unknown program to an offensive powerhouse. Last year, his Red Raiders finished with a record of 11-2 and contended for a national championship.
