UPDATES: Issue of public radio in Texas Tech's hands

Texas Tech University’s administration may decide the future of public radio in San Angelo.

The University of Texas in Austin operates KUTX-FM (90.1) in San Angelo and earlier this year sought to transfer transmission elsewhere. Talks with South Plains Public Radio in Lubbock got serious, pushing the proposal to switch broadcast ties all the way to the Texas Tech administration.

“I think the Tech people were mulling it over. There’s definitely nothing happening at this point,” said Erin Geisler, UT media spokeswoman for the college of communications.

South Plains Public Radio, which broadcasts KOHM-FM out of Texas Tech, was considered first by KUT, the station that runs Austin’s public radio broadcast, because Lubbock had closer connections to San Angelo than Austin does.
