Thousands of Texas Tech students may be among those taking advantage of this 3 day holiday.
It's move-in weekend for those that bleed red and black. Lubbock's Green Queens are on hand to assist students with recycling, reducing and reusing.
In the university's largest recycling project to date, these environmentally conscious folks are helping students by collecting, breaking down and recycling.
Sean Duggan, Director of Tech University Housing says last year, they estimate 50 tons of trash was hauled off.
Green teams will be stationed outside each dorm to gather all kinds of items, including different sized boxes, basically anything cardboard, and they will ensure it gets transported to a local recycling center.
Green Queens say thousands of pounds of waste will avoid being dumped in the Lubbock landfill as a result of this joint-green effort.
