Federal official to speak at Tech commencement

Donald Powell, who served as a federal coordinator for hurricane rebuilding, will speak this weekend at Texas Tech's graduation ceremony.

More than 1,250 students will receive diplomas at the Saturday ceremony that begins at 9 a.m. at the United Spirit Arena, 1701 Indiana Ave.

President George W. Bush named Powell the federal coordinator of Gulf Coast Rebuilding in 2005. He was tasked with developing a long-term plan for the region after Hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Wilma.

Prior to his appointment, Powell was chairman of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. He is now a director at Stone Energy Corporation, a Louisiana-based independent oil and gas company.
