Marfa’s inaugural Jazz Festival is planned for the end of August

Padre’s Marfa will be the site of the inaugural Marfa Jazz Festival on Aug. 28-30.

The first concert at 7 p.m. Aug. 28 at the Crowley Theater features the Latin jazz of the Ruben Gutierrez Quartet, followed by vocalist Greta Matassa of Seattle, Wash., who is with the Paul English Trio.

The second concert at 7 p.m. Aug. 29, also at the Crowley, features the jazz ukulele and percussion of multi-instrumentalist Abe Lagrimas Jr. from Honolulu, followed by the Paul English Trio with guest David Caceres on saxophone and vocals. At noon Aug. 30 there will be a jazz jam at Padre’s with free admission.

Paul English is a prolific and versatile composer, has performed with a “Who’s Who” of music legends including Dizzy Gillespie and Willie Nelson, has appeared on over 350 records, and is an acclaimed music educator. The past year, Paul served as interim director of Jazz Studies at Texas Tech University. Alumni of the high-spirited Paul English Group of the 1980s include Kirk Whalum and Dwight Sills.
