The New Faces on Capitol Hill

Texas Tech University has named 13 students to serve as congressional interns during the spring 2009 semester.

The Office of the President at Texas Tech sponsors and provides the scholarships for the Congressional Internship Program. As participants in the program, students observe how the government functions while working for senators and representatives. Students are selected through an interview process to complete an internship in the nation’s capital in the fall or spring.

“In many cases, our internship program has been a life-changing experience for the students,” said President Guy Bailey. “Regardless of their career choice, the students will benefit from the experience of seeing first-hand how the political process will affect their futures.”

The New Interns Include:

• Robert Biddy, a senior civil engineering major from Paducah, is working in the office of U.S. Rep. Mac Thornberry of Amarillo.
• Alex Dailey, a junior business major from Friendswood, is working in the office of U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee of Houston.
• Jaci Glover, a senior political science major from Linden, is working in the office of U.S. Rep. John Carter of Round Rock.
• Joseph Harriger, a junior finance major from Lubbock, is working in the office of U.S. Rep. Randy Neugebauer of Lubbock.
• Patrick Isenberg, a sophomore public relations major from San Antonio, is working in the office of U.S. Sen. John Cornyn.
• Grant Matthews, a senior political science major from Arlington, is working in the office of U.S. Rep. Joe Barton of Ennis.
• Lee Mazurek, a senior business major from Seabrook, is working in the office of U.S. Rep. Ciro Rodriguez of San Antonio.
• Ian Nelson, a senior history major from Pipe Creek, is working in the office of U.S. Rep. Lamar Smith of San Antonio.
• Heidi Kloes, a senior music major from Nederland, is working in the office of U.S. Rep. Charles Gonzalez of San Antonio.
• Kate Meriwhether, a junior public relations major from Abilene, is working in the office of U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison.
• Keisha McKenzie, a technical communications doctoral student from Kent, England, is working in the office of the Judiciary Committee.
• Lauren Salazar, a junior finance major from Forney, is working in the office of U.S. Rep. Sam Johnson of Plano.
• Andrew Serrano, a sophomore political science major from Odessa, is working in the office of U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar of Laredo.
