Fire can help in land management

The benefits of fires started for beneficial purposes was a hot topic Wednesday at the Texas Farm, Ranch and Wildlife Expo, set against the backdrop of recent grass and brush fire outbreaks in the area.

Dr. Sandra Rideout-Hanzak, assistant professor of fire ecology at Texas Tech, highlighted past research in the use of fire and current research projects. One goal is to learn how fire can damage an unwanted plant while leaving wanted plants unharmed or benefiting, she said.
