Texas Tech grad to lead NASA's Mission Control for next shuttle mission

El Paso native Ginger Kerrick does not let setbacks hold her back.And it is this resiliency, which those around her began to notice when she was a five-year-old growing up in El Paso, that now has Kerrick ready for her biggest feat to date: when the Space Shuttle Endeavour launches at 5:55 p.m. MST Friday, Kerrick will be the NASA flight director in charge of Mission Control.

Monica Castro, a current teacher at Montwood High School, knew Kerrick since their days at Desert View Middle School and then at Hanks High School. Kerrick graduated in 1987 from Hanks and then she went to UTEP before transferring to Texas Tech.

"She's a great person," said Castro, who's last name in high school was Herrera. "She was always at the top of her class. She was a loving, giving person and very thoughtful."
