Alamogordo High School Graduate Named 2008 Distinguished Engineering Student

The Texas Tech College of Engineering has named Travis Turnbull the recipient of the
McAuley Distinguished Engineering Student Award for 2008.
The award, provided by members of the College of Engineering Dean’s Council, is
named in memory of James A. McAuley, a member of the Texas Tech College of Engineering
Dean’s Council, and a Texas Tech Distinguished Engineer.
Turnbull was selected because of outstanding academic achievements, honors, activities,
interests, and aspirations. Academically, he has been on the TTU President’s List
with a 4.0 GPA for six semesters and has a 3.96 cumulative GPA. He will graduate in
May 2008 with a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering, with highest
honors. He plans to pursue master’s and a doctoral degrees.
Turnbull has earned numerous scholarships and received national recognition over the
course of his undergraduate career. He is the recipient of the M. B. McDonald Scholarship
and the Paul V. Post Jr. Memorial Scholarship from the Texas Tech Mechanical Engineering
Department. He was honored with one of two Achievement Rewards for College Scientists
scholarships from the Lubbock chapter for students at TTU, and received an American
Society of Mechanical Engineers Foundation Scholarship and American Electric Power
Scholarship. Since his junior year, Turnbull has been involved in the Honors College
Undergraduate Research Fellowship program.
While pursuing an academically challenging course of study, Turnbull also served as
an officer for the Texas Tech student chapter of the American Society of Mechanical
Engineers and for Pi Tau Sigma, the Texas Tech mechanical engineering honor society.
As one of the top 50 graduating seniors at Texas Tech, he was selected to be a member
of the Forum Chapter of Mortar Board on the basis of scholarship, leadership and community
Turnbull graduated from Alamogordo High School in May 2004.
