The Texas Tech University Alumni Association will hold its Official Class Ring
ceremonies for the fall semester tonight, Wednesday and Thursday (Nov. 13, 14 and
15) in the banquet hall of the Merket Alumni Center, near 17th Street and University
Avenue.
The event, co-hosted by the Student Alumni Association Board of Directors, begins
with refreshments at 6:30 p.m. followed by the ceremony at 7 p.m.
Tuesday night, Jim Brink, senior vice provost, will present the rings and Robert Wernsman,
professor of mass communications, will announce the ring recipients for the College
of Arts and Sciences, College of Mass Communications and Health Sciences Center.
Wednesday Texas Tech President Jon Whitmore will present the rings and William Marcy,
Texas Tech provost, will announce the ring recipients for the College of Architecture,
Rawls College of Business Administration, College of Visual and Performing Arts and
the College of Education.
Thursday Marcy will present the rings and Wernsman will announce the ring recipients
for the College of Agriculture Sciences and Natural Resources, College of Engineering
and the College of Human Sciences.
A symbol of academic achievement, the Official Class Ring is a tradition brought back
from the 1950’s that will never change. In 1999, students, alumni and administrators
collaborated to design a ring that will remain the same forever.
Each ring captures the essence of Texas Tech with the Double T on top, surrounded
by the university’s name and date of establishment. The words "Strive for Honor" from
"The Matador Song" are forged inside each ring. This phrase serves as a reminder to
each graduate to excel with integrity in all future endeavors. Upon graduation, ring
recipients turn their rings with the Double T facing outward, signifying graduating
from Texas Tech and the beginning of their careers.
A portion of the proceeds from the rings benefit First Generation Scholarships. For
