High hopes for wind facility

A consortium led by the University of Houston hopes a planned wind turbine test facility near Corpus Christi will help secure Texas' place as a hub for green power development.

The 22-acre facility donated by oil giant BP will be used to test the next generation of wind turbine blades, a necessary task to continue improving power output of the equipment, said Raymond Flumerfelt, dean of the Cullen College of Engineering at the University of Houston.

Consortium members include the University of Texas at Austin, Texas A&M University, Texas Tech University, the Houston Advanced Research Center, the Texas General Land Office, the State Energy Conservation Office, BP, Shell, Dow, Huntsman and Good Co.
