LUBBOCK – Both the Lubbock Coalition for Literacy and Lubbock readers will have extra reason to celebrate this Halloween as the Texas Tech Sigma Tau Delta English Honor Society ‘trick or treats’ for books in the Lubbock community.

On Monday, Oct. 31, members of Sigma Tau Delta and the Texas Tech Mortar Board, a national senior honor society, will be leaving bags at some Lubbock homes, where residents can place donated books. Organizers will then return on Nov. 4 to pick up the book-filled bags.

Books collected through the initiative will be donated to the Lubbock Coalition for Literacy.

“Our mission is to promote awareness of the importance of literacy and to encourage literacy both on campus and in the Lubbock community as a whole,” said Amber Swinford, president of Sigma Tau Delta and the community service chair for Mortar Board. “The two organizations are teaming up to do this book drive so that we can make the biggest difference possible.”

Members of the community interested in participating in the event are encouraged to call Amber Swinford, at (806) 795-1574.
