LUBBOCK – The Texas Tech University Center for Campus Life and the Provost's Office
will host convocation for all first-year students at 5 p.m., Tuesday (Aug. 30), in
the United Spirit Arena.
Convocation, or in Latin, convoco, meaning "calling together," is an occasion at the
university for faculty and staff to bring together students and welcome them to the
Texas Tech family.
Convocation marks the official beginning of a student’s college experience.
President Jon Whitmore will speak at the event. Saira Shah, author of The Storyteller’s
Daughter, will be the special guest speaker. Shah's book is the spotlight book for
the university's 2005 summer reading program, which is designed to introduce students
to the intellectual life of Texas Tech University.
