LUBBOCK – The third annual Stork’s Nest Baby Shower, hosted by students in the maternal/child
class at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center’s School of Nursing, will take
place at 10:30 a.m. July 11 at the International Cultural Center, 601 Indiana Ave.
The public is invited to attend the event, which will feature numerous raffle and
auction items, including sports items signed by Texas Tech coaches.
Prior to the event, Health Sciences Center nursing students will be in the community
seeking donations of new baby items, auction items or money to be used by the Stork’s
Nest, a program designed to increase the number of women who get early and regular
prenatal care. The Stork’s Nest provides incentives to help pregnant women make and
keep prenatal care appointments, as well as teaches expectant parents about healthy
prenatal and infant care practices.
“This project is very important to the women who visit the Stork’s Nest, many of whom
are teenagers, as well as the nursing students who have a chance to see the importance
of community health needs and have the opportunity to give back to their community,”
said Linda Brice, R.N., Ph.D., assistant professor in the School of Nursing.
Brice said this year, the students’ goal is to raise $23,000 from the shower to purchase
additional baby items.
The Stork’s Nest is a cooperative national project of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc.
and the March of Dimes. In conjunction with the shower, a March of Dimes baby photo
exhibit will be at the Health Sciences Center in the lobby of the Academic Classroom
Building the week of July 4, and will then be on display at the shower.
Donations of baby items are now being accepted. For more details, contact Brice at
743-2730, ext. 239.
