LUBBOCK – The Texas Tech University College of Visual and Performing Arts will host
a scholarship gala benefiting the Texas Tech School of Music at 7:30 p.m. on March
7 at the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas.
The concert, “A Night on Broadway,” is underwritten by PlainsCapital Bank and hosted
by Plains Capital Corporation chairman and chief executive officer Alan B. White and
his wife Lee Ann. Alan White is a graduate of Texas Tech and a former Texas Tech regent.
The concert will feature performances by Texas Tech students and distinguished Texas
Tech alumni. Music from "42nd Street," "The Phantom of the Opera," "Purlie," "Little
Shop of Horrors," "Showboat," "Porgy and Bess," "Tosca" and more will be performed.
Garry W. Owens, dean of the College of Visual and Performing Arts, said the concert
will give Texas Tech students the opportunity to perform in one of the world's most
prestigious concert halls.
"For the most part, we are not afforded the opportunity to showcase our stellar programs
in such a glorious facility before a statewide audience," said Owens. "It's a rare
opportunity that the university, the college, and our students look forward to and
appreciate."
Special guest performers will include David Gaschen, a tenor who currently appears
in the Broadway musical "The Phantom of the Opera"; Terry Cook, a bass who is best
known for his performances in "Porgy and Bess"; Mary Jane Johnson, a soprano who has
performed at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City, the Opera Bastille in Paris,
the Teatro alla Scala in Milan and other venues throughout the world; and Ann Sanders,
who is currently featured in the Broadway production of "Avenue Q." All of the guest
performers are graduates of Texas Tech.
Tickets for the concert are $25 and are available from Titas Tickets at (214) 528-5576.
