Texas Tech University’s Office of Undergraduate Admissions has chosen La Parsha Wise, a counselor at Amarillo High School, as the recipient of the Excellence in College Admission Counseling Award. Wise will be presented with the honor at 1 p.m. Thursday (Nov. 16) at Amarillo High School.
Recipients of the award are chosen from among college advising professionals who demonstrate extraordinary actions to create access to higher education for students; support Texas Tech’s efforts to increase enrollment, increase diversity and promote student success; and participate in Texas Tech recruitment programming.
“Ms. Wise has helped us increase the number of students from Amarillo High School who enroll at Texas Tech and, most importantly, she has helped us spread the excitement of what is it like to be a Red Raider,” said Jamie Hansard, executive director of undergraduate admissions. “Her dedication to her students is awe-inspiring and we want to recognize her contributions to these young students’ lives.”
Wise was chosen by a selection committee for the award based on her emphasis in understanding the programs offered by Texas Tech, which allows her to better inform her students of the excellent academic and extracurricular opportunities available to her students at Texas Tech.
“Ms. Wise is our biggest ally in the Texas Panhandle,” said Maryellen Baeza, recruitment manager for West Texas.
A new era of excellence is dawning as Texas Tech University achieves the Tier One designation. As of 2016, Texas Tech is listed among the nation's top doctoral universities in the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. Of the 115 universities listed in the Highest Research Activity category, Texas Tech is one of 81 public institutions in the top tier.
Research and enrollment numbers are at record levels, which cement Texas Tech's commitment to attracting and retaining quality students. The university strives to foster an environment that celebrates student accomplishment above all else. Texas Tech is large enough to provide the best in facilities and academics, but small enough to focus on each student individually.
