Texas Tech University Programs to Host Summer Camps

Camps will be available for all ages and interests.

Summer Camps

Several Texas Tech University departments and programs will host camps for community members this summer. The camps vary from hobbies to education enrichment. Some campers will have the option to stay on campus, but everyone will get a taste of the college experience.

  • Science: It’s A Girl Thing
    • Dispels myths and misconceptions about science and promotes women in STEM-based careers.
    • Grades 5-7: June 11-15; grades 7-12: June 18-22
    • Cost: $550
  • Shake Hands With Your Future
    • Interactive classes, college-level curriculum with developmentally appropriate classes and other resources only available to Texas Tech students. Allows campers to get a well-rounded idea of what they want to pursue academically while experiencing life on campus.
    • Grades 4-7: July 16-20; grades 8-12: July 23-27
    • Cost: $625
  • Run on the Wind
    • Curriculum built around the field of wind science and wind power production; students focus on principles and physics, learn about atmospheric and meteorological aspects and build a wind turbine.

  • Minecrafter
    • The camp introduces students to computer programming, computer coding and video game design.

  • Generation TECH
    • Prepares and provides an introduction to the field of renewable energy

  • Sports Media 
    • Collaboration with the College of Media and Communication to capture the interest of students wanting to become a sportscaster, producer or host. Focuses on enhancing communication skills to incorporate them into today’s multimedia technology.

Summer Chess Camp ()

    • Lessons, tournaments, blitz chess, bug-house, science spectrum workshops and UIL chess puzzle preparation. Free T-shirt for all participants and trophies for tournament winners.

    • Cost: Full day – $270, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m., includes lunch; Half day – $135, 1–4 p.m.

  • Fashion Camp 2017: Glue, Glitter and Glamour
    • This camp is for people interested in learning about fashion and design. Campers will participate in design and crafting, learn sewing safety and techniques and participate in various theme nights. Campers will host a fashion show for their friends and families at the end of the week.
    • Ages 7-13
    • June 26-30
    • Cost: $500 for overnight campers who want to stay in dorms or $400 for day campers who pay before May 1.
    • After May 1, the price increases to $600 for overnight campers and $500 for day campers.
    • There is a 10 percent discount for returning campers, campers from 4-H or families sending more than one member.
    • Deadline to register is May 31.
  • Chef Camp
    • Chef Camp gives people a chance to expand their culinary skills by cooking various dishes, learning plating techniques and proper food handling, participating in theme nights and an Iron Chef competition at the end of the week.
    • Ages 13-16
    • June 26-30
    • Cost: $650 for overnight campers who want to stay in dorms or $550 for day campers who pay before May 1.
    • After May 1, the price increases to $750 for overnight campers and $650 for day campers.
    • There is a 10 percent discount for returning campers, campers from 4-H or families sending more than one member.
    • Deadline to register is May 31.

Edward E. Whitcare College of Engineering (u)

  • Explore Engineering
    • Campers will learn about each engineering discipline, campus life, the College of Engineering and Texas Tech.
    • High school sophomores and juniors
    • June 18-23
    • Campers will live in a residence hall
    • Cost: $350 with a few commuter spots at $200

Rec Sports ()

  • Youth Summer Sports Camp
    • Campers will participate in rock climbing, archery, swim lessons, team sports and camp games.
    • The first three sessions will feature swim lessons taught by Red Cross swim instructors.
    • Ages 7-14
    • Sessions run 8 a.m.–noon
      • Session 1: June 5-16
      • Session 2: June 19-30
      • Session 3: July 10-21
  • Availability is limited to 120 campers per session.

    • One-week session designed for older, experienced campers. Camp days begin with open swimming and continue with unique recreation activities.

National Ranching Heritage Center ()

  • Summer Youth Classes
    • Hands-on learning at the National Ranching Heritage Center.
    • Must have completed grades 1-5

Personal Financial Planning ()

  • Financial Planning Academy
    • Financial Planning Academy, sponsored by the Charles Schwab Foundation, is a one-of-a-kind summer program that offers high schoolers education and training in the core areas of personal financial management. Participants will gain firsthand experience working as part of a team during a week of events and competitions designed to increase financial knowledge and know-how.
    • Students entering their sophomore, junior or senior year of high school in fall 2017

  • All-State Choir Camp
    • A camp for high school choir students to receive an introduction to the Texas All-State audition music.
